Korean Language Department
Educational goals
Its educational direction is to build sound Korean language basics
and broad scientific and cultural knowledge. The goal is to develop
human resources with Korean language expertise who can carry out
the tasks of translation, research, education, and management
in the fields of foreign affairs, trade, economics, culture, newspaper
publishing, education, science, and tourism. The main curriculum
is the fundamental theory and standard knowledge of the Korean
language, including linguistics, cultural history, politics, economics,
foreign diplomacy, society, and culture. It trains the students
in listening and speaking, so that they will be better prepared
to learn the scientific research methods needed in society.
Activities and Prospects
This major was established as a preparatory course in 1995 and
it was upgraded to regular department status in 1998 to produce
excellent human resources. It sent some junior students to Korean
universities as exchange students, and some senior students in
2001 to an International Education Promotion Institute. During
that summer vacation the students participated in Korean language
speech contests. Since 1997, with the theme of ¡°The Development
and Prospects of Korean Language Education in China¡±, four annual
seminars have been held for Korean language scholars in Korea
and China, and a conference for Korean language teachers in China.
One of our strengths is that all our teachers are native Koreans.
They will lead the future of Korean language education in China.
About 10%of graduates are sent to Korean universities to make
them high level Korean language teachers for China. The students
will have many opportunities to exercise their ability with Korean
companies in Korea and China and in many other jobs related to
Korea.

German Language Department
Educational goals
The German Language Department, established in September 2000,
recruited 20 new students in Sep. 2001. The goal is to train students
of high ability. Experience has shown that learning the German
language at YUST is intensive but also very beneficial for the
students, as they learn the linguistic and cultural background
of Germany, a country in the heart of Europe which is one of the
most powerful nations worldwide. Germany is especially important
in the area of foreign trade with China. German studies will provide
education in the German language, such as conversation, reading,
writing and linguistics, translation and language teaching. The
plan is to educate students to advance in occupational expertise
in various fields that require German, such as business, the academic
world, tourism, publishing, administration, industry, and journalism.
Besides professional training, the students will be enabled to
pursue further studies abroad in one of the German speaking countries
of Europe (Germany, Switzerland, Austria). Because the lectures
will be main lygiven by native German speakers, the students at
YUST will find a very favorable climate for learning the German
language.
Laboratory Practice
This department has two language practice rooms (55 and 48 seats)
and a video room, for helping in the study of German through audiovisual
education. Language practice and study continues through the summer
term, when from the end of June to July each year, all the dormitories
become English Houses. This means that students can study language
and culture with the foreign teacher assigned to their dormitory.
