(1)Department
of Biochemical Engineering
Educational goals
Biochemical engineering tries to produce various kinds of materials
which are very useful to human beings using living matter such
as micro-organisms, plants and animals. It includes the development
of processing technologies for manufacturing. The main subjects
are biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, bioseparation
process, fermentation technology, and food engineering. Biological
resources are various and abundant in China, partly due to vast
land resources and various climates. Many kinds of agricultural
products are produced and this is especially true in Jilin province.
Various kinds of natural herbs have been found on Changbai Mountain
and are being used as medicine. The goal is to educate students
to develop these natural resources into useful materials for human
health and well-being.
Activities and Prospects
Biotechnology is a major academic field of the 21st century and
recently has shown a rapid growth. Human beings hope that it will
solve many problems involving food, diseases, and the environment.
The intellectuals in this field play a major role as professors,
researchers, and professionals in the areas of pharmaceuticals
and medicines, the food industry, agricultural, livestock, and
marine products, environmental improvement, and alternative-energy
development. Biochemical engineering gives hope and expectancy
to those who wish to live a high quality life in a favorable environment.
Therefore people are very interested in biotechnology and every
day sees new research groups start up and develop.
(2)
Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology
Educational goals
The goals are to teach the students chemical processes and technology
and to train technical experts in the area of process design,
process development and process management. The department also
engages its students in scientific research in the fields of chemical
technology, petrochemical engineering, refinery chemistry, energy
fiber industry, and environmental engineering.
Activities and Prospects
This major can act as the backbone of industries related to new
materials, including petrochemistry, refinery chemistry, environmental
fields, and semi-conductors. Graduates can work as researchers
at national or industrial research centers. Timely demands from
inside and outside the country are actively promoting the bright
prospects for chemical technology experts.
